The Power of Joy: How to Navigate Cravings and Impulses
Have you ever found yourself standing in front of the fridge, mindlessly reaching for a snack, only to wonder why you even bothered? Or perhaps you’ve impulsively made a investment decision, only to later question your judgment? We’ve all been there. Cravings and impulses can be powerful forces that drive our actions, but they can also lead us astray. So, how can we distinguish between the impulses that are worth following and those that are better left ignored?
The answer, according to Esther Hicks, lies in the source of the impulse. In a recent excerpt from a talk given in Portland, OR, Esther shared a simple yet profound rule of thumb that can be applied to all areas of life, from eating and investing to relationships and personal growth. “If the impulse comes from a joyous thought that feels good, follow it,” she advises. “If the impulse comes from an uncomfortable thought that felt bad, don’t follow it.” This straightforward guidance offers a powerful tool for navigating the complex landscape of our desires and impulses.
At first glance, this rule may seem simplistic, but its implications are far-reaching. When we act on impulse, we’re often driven by a mix of motivations, some of which may be unconscious or rooted in negative emotions. For example, we might reach for that snack out of boredom, stress, or habit, rather than genuine hunger. Similarly, we might make an impulsive investment decision based on fear or anxiety, rather than a clear-headed assessment of the situation. By tuning into the underlying emotional tone of our impulses, we can begin to discern whether they’re driven by a positive, joyful energy or a negative, uncomfortable one.
When we follow impulses that stem from joyous thoughts, we’re more likely to feel a sense of alignment and fulfillment. We’re acting from a place of positivity and enthusiasm, rather than reacting to stress or discomfort. On the other hand, when we act on impulses driven by uncomfortable thoughts, we’re more likely to experience regret, anxiety, or dissatisfaction. By learning to distinguish between these two types of impulses, we can cultivate a more intuitive and joyful approach to decision-making.
So, the next time you feel the urge to act on an impulse, take a moment to tune into your inner world. Ask yourself: “Is this feeling coming from a place of joy and positivity, or is it driven by discomfort or negativity?” By applying Esther’s simple yet powerful rule, you can begin to navigate the complex landscape of your desires and impulses with greater ease and clarity. And as you do, you may find that you’re able to make more intentional, joyful choices that align with your deepest desires and values.

Cravings are going to occur to you. So here’s the rule of thumb about eating, or about investing in the stock market, or about anything else: If the impulse comes from a joyous thought that feels good, follow it. If the impulse comes from an uncomfortable thought that felt bad, don’t follow it.
