The Happiness Shortcut: Why Waiting for “Someday” is Optional

We often fall into a predictable pattern in our daily lives. We create long to-do lists, set ambitious goals, and meticulously define our “rights” and “wrongs.” We tell ourselves that once we cross a specific item off our list, hit a certain financial milestone, or reach a particular status, we will finally arrive at a place of fulfillment. We treat happiness as a destination—a prize waiting for us at the end of a long, arduous journey.

However, it is worth pausing to consider the logic behind this pursuit. If the ultimate goal of all our striving is simply to feel better, why do we insist on making it conditional? By tethering our contentment to external manifestations, we create a delay. We essentially convince ourselves that happiness is a reward we haven’t earned yet, rather than a state of mind we can access right now.

This perspective shift highlights a profound question: If the end goal is happiness, why not take the shortcut? Why wait for the checklist to be completed before allowing yourself to feel joy, peace, or gratitude? When we realize that our current actions are merely vehicles for a feeling we crave, we gain the power to decouple that feeling from our circumstances.

Choosing to be happy in the present moment isn’t about ignoring your goals or giving up on progress. Instead, it is about changing your approach. By cultivating a sense of well-being today, you actually become more effective in your pursuits. When you aren’t operating from a place of “lack” or “waiting,” your energy shifts. You stop working to get happy and start working from a place of happiness.

The next time you find yourself bogged down by the weight of your to-do list, remember that you don’t need to reach a specific destination to claim your joy. Happiness is not a future event—it is a choice available to you in the here and now. Don’t wait for your circumstances to change; take the shortcut, embrace the present, and decide to be happy today.

Everything that I think that I need to do is all only in order to propel me to some place that when I get there, I think I will be happier. So, everything that I am doing, no matter what it is, all of my lists of rights and wrongs…are all about me getting to a manifestation that I believe I will then be happier… So, why don’t I take a short cut and just go get happy?
