The Art of Selective Focus: Why You Should Stop “Facing Reality”

We are often told from a young age that we must “face reality.” This piece of advice is usually delivered when we are dreaming big or hoping for something that hasn’t happened yet. The conventional wisdom suggests that by staring at our current problems, we become more grounded and responsible. However, a profound teaching from Esther Hicks—specifically from a 1997 gathering in San Antonio—suggests a completely different approach: “Never face reality unless your reality is just the way you want it to be.”

At first glance, this statement might seem impractical, perhaps even delusional. But when we look closer at the mechanics of mindset and personal growth, it reveals a powerful truth about how we shape our lives. If we are constantly observing what is wrong, what is missing, or what is frustrating, we are essentially keeping our focus pinned to those very circumstances. In the world of manifestation and cognitive psychology, what we focus on tends to expand. By “facing” a reality we dislike, we inadvertently give it more of our energy and attention.

The core of this philosophy is the understanding that our current reality is simply a collection of past thoughts and actions. It is a “residual effect.” If you are not satisfied with your current situation, staring at it and complaining about it only reinforces the vibration of that dissatisfaction. To change your life, you must look beyond what is currently happening and begin to focus on what you desire. This isn’t about ignoring responsibilities, but rather about choosing where you place your emotional and mental emphasis.

Choosing to ignore an unpleasant reality in favor of a desired one is an act of mental discipline. It requires us to use our imagination to visualize the life we want to lead, even when the current “facts” suggest otherwise. When we dwell on our goals and the feelings of success and happiness, we begin to align our internal state with those outcomes. This shift in perspective often leads to inspired action, new ideas, and a more positive attitude, which eventually transforms the physical reality around us.

Ultimately, the invitation to “never face reality” unless it’s perfect is a call to take control of your own narrative. It encourages us to be the creators of our experiences rather than mere observers of our circumstances. By selectively focusing on the good, the hopeful, and the “what if,” we pave the way for a reality that eventually becomes exactly what we want it to be. Instead of being anchored by the present, we can be pulled forward by the vision of our future.
