Moving Beyond the Struggle: How to Focus on Your Desires for a Brighter Future
In the world of personal development and mindset coaching, there is a long-standing myth that significant growth requires immense suffering. We are often taught that “no pain, no gain” is the only path to success. However, a profound excerpt from a 2001 workshop in San Antonio by Esther Hicks offers a refreshing perspective: struggle is not a prerequisite for progress.
If you have been feeling weighed down by past challenges, it is time to shift your perspective. Here is how you can stop justifying your struggles and start focusing on where you are going.
The Myth of Necessary Suffering
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that our value is tied to how much we have endured. We often share stories of our hardships as if they are badges of honor. While overcoming obstacles is certainly commendable, the idea that we must suffer to give birth to a new desire is a misconception.
Growth can happen through joy, inspiration, and curiosity just as easily as it can through hardship. When we stop believing that struggle is necessary, we open ourselves up to a more graceful path toward our goals. You do not need to exacerbate your difficulties to prove you are ready for a better life; your desire for improvement is enough justification on its own.
Contrast as a Catalyst, Not a Destination
In philosophical terms, “contrast” refers to the moments in life when we experience what we don’t want. This experience is useful because it provides immediate clarity on what we do want. For example, experiencing financial stress creates a powerful desire for abundance.
The problem arises when we stay focused on the stress rather than the desire it created. As the quote suggests, once you have birthed a desire out of a difficult situation, the work of the struggle is done. You have gained the clarity you needed. There is no benefit to revisiting the pain or re-examining the “contrast” once you know your new direction.
Shifting Your Attention Forward
The most critical step in personal transformation is the direction of your focus. It is easy to fall into the trap of ruminating on the past, analyzing why things went wrong, or who was at fault. However, every moment spent looking backward is a moment taken away from your future.
When you turn your attention toward your goals, you align your energy with solutions rather than problems. This shift in mindset is where true change begins.
Stop Justifying Your Past
One of the most profound pieces of advice in the San Antonio excerpt is to stop justifying your past. We often feel the need to explain why we suffered or why we haven’t reached our goals yet. We build elaborate cases to defend our current position, effectively keeping us anchored to the very things we want to leave behind.
You do not need to justify your past to anyone, including yourself. Your history does not have to be a perfect, linear path of success to “deserve” a bright future. By dropping the need to explain or justify your previous struggles, you free up an immense amount of mental energy. This energy can then be channeled into creating the life you actually want to live.
Final Thoughts: Embrace the New Direction
Life will always present us with challenges, but we have the power to decide how long we let those challenges define us. If you have suffered, use that experience as a springboard to launch your new desires, then leave the spring behind.
Focus on the horizon. Think about your potential, your dreams, and the person you are becoming. The past is a closed chapter; your future is an unwritten book. By focusing on where you are going and letting go of the need to justify where you’ve been, you pave the way for a life of ease, clarity, and fulfillment.
[Reference]:
It’s not necessary for you to exacerbate your contrast with struggle in order to get it into a higher place. It is not necessary to suffer in order to give birth to desire. But when you have suffered and you have given birth to desire, so what? You’ve got a desire. Turn your attention to the desire. Think about where you’re going and never mind where you’ve been. Don’t spend any more time justifying any of that stuff.
