Step Into the Observer Self: How to Practice Open-Centeredness and Find Inner Truth

In our fast-paced world, the mind is often treated like a crowded auditorium. Hundreds of competing voices—worries about the future, regrets about the past, social media notifications, and societal expectations—shout for our attention. Amidst this inner noise, the quiet, steady voice of our deepest truth is often drowned out.

To live in alignment with who we truly are, we must learn to quiet the crowd and invite our inner wisdom to take center stage. Let us explore how we can navigate daily life with a posture of open-centeredness, step back from the dualistic battles of the ego, and allow authentic truth to guide our steps.

1. Giving Truth “The Podium” in Your Daily Life

Imagine your daily awareness as an event. Who is speaking at the microphone? For many of us, the default speaker is the ego—the part of our mind that is highly defensive, easily offended, and constantly seeking validation. When the ego holds the microphone, we react to situations with anxiety, defensiveness, or irritation.

Allowing truth to make its way to the podium today means making a conscious choice to hand the microphone over to your higher self. This inner wisdom does not shout or demand. Instead, it speaks in calm, clear insights. By intentionally inviting this deeper awareness into every event of your day—from your morning commute to a difficult conversation with a colleague—you change the entire atmosphere of your life. You transition from reacting to your circumstances to gracefully responding to them.

2. The Power of “Pre-Deciding” Your Awareness

One of the most powerful spiritual tools we have is the ability to set our intentions before our feet even hit the floor in the morning. When we “pre-decide” how we want to show up in the world, we are no longer at the mercy of external triggers.

By pre-deciding to watch and observe our reactions, we establish ourselves as the “observer” of our lives rather than the v****m of our impulses. When an unexpected challenge arises, instead of immediately falling into frustration, we can pause and think: “Ah, there is that familiar feeling of irritation. I see it, but I do not have to become it.”

This simple act of watching creates a crucial buffer zone between stimulus and response. In that buffer zone lies our freedom to choose peace over conflict.

3. Maintaining a Posture of Open-Centeredness

What does it mean to be “open-centered”? This is a state of being where your heart and mind remain receptive, flexible, and relaxed, even when the world around you is turbulent.

When we are closed-centered, we grip our opinions tightly, build emotional walls, and view others as potential threats to our peace. When we maintain an open-centered posture, we breathe through discomfort. We allow feelings to pass through us like clouds moving across a clear sky, rather than clinging to them.

It is within this spacious, open-centeredness that truth can whisper its guidance. Truth does not need to yell because it is inherently secure. When we quiet our internal defenses, we finally become still enough to hear it.

4. Transcending Old, Dualistic Arguments

The human mind loves duality. It prefers to categorize the world into neat, opposing boxes: right versus wrong, good versus bad, win versus lose. While this binary way of thinking helps us navigate basic physical survival, it is incredibly limiting for emotional and spiritual growth.

Most arguments and internal conflicts are born from this dualistic mindset. The ego is obsessed with being “right” and proving others “wrong.” However, real growth begins when we step outside of this endless tug-of-war.

When you follow the lead of your inner truth, you realize that most dualistic arguments are simply illusions created by the ego to keep us divided and distracted. Truth knows a higher way—one that focuses on understanding, unity, and peace rather than division. By letting go of the need to win every mental debate, you free up immense amounts of energy to focus on what truly matters.

Embracing the Journey Within

Cultivating this level of mindfulness is not a one-time achievement; it is a gentle, daily practice. Each moment offers us a fresh opportunity to step back from the drama of the ego and rest in our quiet center. As you go about your day, remember that you do not have to fight the noise of the world. You simply have to quiet the mind, open your heart, and trust that your inner truth already knows the way.
