From Worry to Wonder: Why Anticipating the Solution Changes Everything
In the heat of a challenge, our natural instinct is to dissect the problem. We analyze what went wrong, we worry about the consequences, and we ask “Why is this happening?” repeatedly. While it feels like we are being productive, this intense focus on the obstacle often creates a mental loop that keeps the solution just out of reach.
A powerful teaching excerpted from Esther Hicks in Orlando, FL, suggests a different approach: “Be less intensely focused on the problem or the question, and feel more anticipation of the solution and the answer.”
This simple shift in perspective is more than just “positive thinking”—it is a strategic mental alignment that opens the door to creativity, clarity, and resolution. Here is how you can move from a state of worry to a state of anticipation.
When we focus intensely on a problem, our brain enters a state of high alert. This “fight or flight” mentality is excellent for avoiding immediate physical danger, but it is detrimental to complex problem-solving. In this state, our peripheral vision narrows—both literally and figuratively. We become so consumed by the “what is” that we lose the ability to see “what could be.”
Fixating on the question creates a “vibrational” or psychological mismatch with the answer. You cannot find a creative solution while your mind is entirely occupied by the stress of the problem. To find the exit, you have to stop staring at the wall and start looking for the door.
Anticipation is a unique emotional state. Unlike hope, which can sometimes feel distant or uncertain, anticipation carries a sense of certainty. Think of the feeling you have when you are waiting for a close friend to arrive or for a package you ordered to be delivered. You don’t know the exact second it will arrive, but you are certain it is on the way.
When you shift your focus to the anticipation of a solution, your biology changes. Your nervous system calms down, and your brain begins to search for “clues” that lead to the answer. By feeling the relief of the solution before it has even arrived, you put yourself in the mental and emotional position to recognize and act upon the right opportunity when it appears.
How do you practically implement this shift when you are facing a real-world challenge? It begins with a conscious decision to pivot your attention.
The “solution” and the “problem” exist on two different frequencies. The problem is characterized by lack, stress, and confusion. The solution is characterized by flow, clarity, and ease. You cannot reach the latter while staying rooted in the former.
By leaning into anticipation, you are essentially “pre-paving” your way to a positive outcome. You are telling your subconscious mind that the answer is already in progress. This reduces anxiety, increases your resilience, and allows you to move through challenges with a sense of grace rather than a sense of struggle.
The next time you find yourself spiraling into a difficult question or a stressful situation, remember the wisdom from Orlando: let go of the “intense focus” on the struggle. Instead, take a deep breath and lean into the feeling that the answer is already on its way to you.
When you stop staring at the problem, you finally give the solution the space it needs to reveal itself. Anticipate the best, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly the answers begin to find you.
