Managing the Highs and Lows: How to Deal with Success and Failure with Grace

We spend much of our lives striving for achievement. From a young age, we are taught to chase goals, build careers, and seek out milestones of success. Yet, have you ever stopped to consider how you actually handle those moments of achievement when they finally arrive?

Surprisingly, many of us react to success with the same underlying anxiety, agitation, and restlessness that we experience during times of setback. In a profound teaching from Heavenletters, we are invited to look closely at our emotional reactions and discover a deeper, more peaceful way to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of life.

For many of us, life is a series of automatic reactions. When things go our way, we experience a rush of elation; when things fall apart, we sink into disappointment or frustration. Culturally, we are trained to view these extreme reactions as natural. However, this constant swinging between high and low states means we are letting external circumstances control our inner world. We become like puppets on a string, reacting instantly to whatever the world throws our way.

A beautiful metaphor for this is the difference between a jukebox and an orchestra leader. A jukebox has no choice but to play whatever tune is selected by an outside force. If life shouts “success,” we play a joyous song; if life shouts “failure,” we play a somber tune.

To live with true peace, we must transition from being a jukebox to becoming the orchestra leader of our own lives. An orchestra leader is not at the mercy of sudden noises or external demands. Instead, they direct the music from a place of inner mastery, maintaining harmony regardless of the chaotic sounds around them.

It is easy to assume that elation is a purely positive state of mind. However, elation and deflation are actually two sides of the same coin. Both are intense, temporary states driven by external events. When we tie our happiness entirely to our successes, we inadvertently set ourselves up for fear—the fear of losing what we have gained, or the anxiety of wondering how we will sustain it.

This is why we often feel a sense of flutter or agitation even when we succeed. We are practicing the same habits of restlessness that we use when we experience disappointment. True emotional freedom comes when we learn to be “neutral deciders.” This does not mean we cannot enjoy our achievements, but rather that we do not let them dictate our fundamental sense of self-worth.

How do we cultivate this state of peaceful neutrality? We can look to nature for guidance. Consider a quiet stream winding its way through a vast landscape. Even if disruptions occur along its banks, the stream continues to flow at its own natural pace. It does not speed up in a panic, nor does it grind to a halt. It simply flows, embodying a steady, quiet strength.

Similarly, we can view ourselves as a tree in a forest, a sun that shines, or a moon that reflects light. When we align with this internal stillness, we realize that we do not have to change colors like a chameleon to match our surroundings. We can remain anchored in who we are, allowing the chaotic events of the outer world to pass by without sweeping us away.

Imagine a knock at your front door. When you hear the sound, you do not need to rush in a panic or tremble with anticipation. You can walk calmly to the door, open it, and greet whoever is standing there.

In life, success and failure are simply messengers delivering news. Sometimes the news is highly favorable, and sometimes it is not. But in either case, it is just information. It does not have the power to shake your core unless you allow it to. By treating all news—both good and bad—with equitable grace, you preserve your energy and protect your peace of mind.

To practice this mindset in your everyday life, focus on cultivating a quiet awareness that lies beneath your daily activities. When a major success comes your way, take a moment to breathe deeply, express gratitude, and remain grounded. Likewise, when you face a setback, remind yourself that this moment does not define you.

By choosing to listen to the stillness within, you step off the emotional roller coaster. You begin to understand that you are not made by your successes or your failures. Instead, you are the creator of your own inner peace, forever stable, forever whole, and always capable of navigating the world with grace.

How to Deal with Success | Heavenletters

Aug 12 2026

God said:

How you deal with success is the same as how you deal with non-success. You agitate. You flutter.

All of your lives, you are practicing for success.

Every time things did not go the way you wanted, you called that failure and were disappointed. You were practicing your reaction to success whether you knew it or not. You were moved by your disappointment. Perhaps you cried and retreated. Perhaps you jumped up and down. Perhaps you became stony and couldn’t move. Perhaps you were floored.

How you have been handling disappointment is how you will handle success.

You have been letting what comes to you in life train you! You have been trying to boss life around, but it has been ordering you. You have been affected by it like a puppet on the string. Is that not so?

Something from the outside enters your arena, and you dance to its tune.

You want to be the orchestra leader, but when there is a shout, “Polka!”, you play a polka. A shout, “Waltz!”, and you play a waltz. A shout, “Jazz!”, and you play jazz. Such excitement! A shout, “Failure!”, and you deflate. A shout, “Success!”, and you are elated. That is not being an orchestra leader. That is being a jukebox.

Elation is just the opposite pole to deflation or defeat.

I do not tell you to disallow the requests that life gives you, but I suggest that you be the neutral decider. Whatever life shouts at you, you don’t have to jump to its tune.

I tell you, My children, that what you call success and what you call failure do not make your life. You make your life.

Life is many-colored.

The degree to which the colors affect you is your choice. You do not have to be randomly affected.

Lean to the idea that you are a quiet stream that runs through life. You are a tree in the forest. You are a sun that shines. You are a cool moon that reflects. You are an overallness of life.

A war can go on beside a stream, and the stream goes on as always. It continues to flow and does not speed up nor slow down.

It seems that My children have had the idea that it is good to speed up, that it is good to go past the speed limit, that you should be revved up when you’re happy and revved up when you’re down. You have had the idea that you are supposed to be a chameleon who changes color according to the colors around him.

But you are a Human being, and a stillness runs through you that you want to listen to and reveal and absorb and reflect. Be accountable to that stillness and not so much to what goes on around you.

Remember who you are in all circumstances. This does not mean to assume a pose. From knowingness, not from will, stay as you are. Let your awareness beam into something greater than the fragments and shards of uncertain activity around you.

When there is a knock at your door, you don’t have to rush to open it. You can walk over to it. You can greet equitably what waits at your door. In any case, it is a mailman at your door. Whoever stands there has a message for you. It may be a message you favor. It may be a message you don’t. Take each. No flurry is necessary. No storm of any kind.

Some news has come to your door. It is only news. It does not have to make you quiver and shake. You can be the same after the news as before the news. News is not earthshaking. News comes and goes, and you are forever a child of God.
