Mastering Your Mindset: How to Shift from Default Attraction to Deliberate Living
Have you ever looked at your life—specifically your relationships—and wondered, “How did I end up here again?” Whether it’s a string of difficult coworkers, repetitive conflicts with partners, or a general sense of being misunderstood, many of us feel like we are magnets for experiences we never asked for.
The truth is, we often attract these situations not because we want them, but because we are operating on “autopilot.” In the teachings of Abraham-Hicks, specifically in the book The Vortex, this phenomenon is known as attraction by default.
Understanding the difference between default attraction and deliberate intent is the first step toward transforming your social circle and your life. Here is how you can stop inviting the unwanted and start creating the experiences you truly desire.
Most of us believe that to attract something, we must actively desire it. However, the Law of Attraction is indifferent to whether a thought is “positive” or “negative.” It simply responds to the frequency of your focus.
As the excerpt suggests, many of the experiences we find ourselves in were not chosen with “deliberate intent.” Instead, they are the result of chronic thoughts. If you spend your time worrying about being lonely, complaining about past betrayals, or fearing future rejection, your mind is effectively “asking” for matching experiences.
Default attraction happens when we allow our environment to dictate our thoughts. If things are going poorly and we focus on how poorly they are going, we inadvertently signal the universe to bring us more of that specific vibration.
The Law of Attraction states that “like attracts like.” This means that your mind is a magnet. The most important takeaway from Esther Hicks’ teachings is this: You get what you think about, whether you want it or not.
Chronic thoughts about unwanted things invite matching experiences because the Law of Attraction doesn’t hear the “no” or the “don’t”—it only hears the subject of your focus.
To change who and what you attract, you must move from being a passive observer of your thoughts to a deliberate creator. This requires a conscious shift in where you place your attention.
Take an inventory of your daily internal monologue. Are you replaying old arguments? Are you anticipating problems before they happen? Identifying these patterns is the first step to breaking them.
The moment you catch yourself thinking about something unwanted, pivot. Ask yourself: “If I don’t want this, then what DO I want?” Focus your energy on the answer to that question. By defining what a “cooperative relationship” looks like to you, you begin to align your thoughts with that reality.
Your emotions are your greatest guidance system. If you feel uneasy, frustrated, or pessimistic, it’s a sign that you are currently attracting by default. Use these feelings as a prompt to shift your thoughts toward something that feels slightly better.
In The Vortex, the concept of “cooperative relationships” is central. These are relationships that are in alignment with your true self. When you practice deliberate intent, you stop trying to “fix” people or situations in the physical world and start fixing your own vibrational output.
By reaching for thoughts that feel better, you enter a state of alignment (the Vortex), where the Law of Attraction can assemble relationships that are supportive, loving, and productive.
We are all creators of our own experience, but many of us have been creating “by default” for years. By understanding that your chronic thoughts act as an invitation, you regain the power to change your guest list.
Stop checking for what is “wrong” in your relationships and start looking for what you want to see. As you shift your intent from reacting to the world to deliberately choosing your focus, you will find that the unwanted experiences naturally fade away, making room for the cooperative, fulfilling connections you deserve.
[Reference]:
By Default, I Could Have Attracted Unwanted Relationships … Many of the relationships or experiences you have attracted you would not have deliberately attracted if you had been doing it on purpose, but much of your attraction is not done by deliberate intent, but rather by default. It is important to understand that you get what you think about, whether you want it or not. And chronic thoughts about unwanted things invite, or ask for, matching experiences. The Law of Attraction makes it so.
