The Inherent Buoyancy of the Soul: Why Your Desires Are Your Greatest Guide

In the realm of personal development and spiritual growth, there is a recurring theme that often challenges our traditional understanding of self-discipline. We are frequently taught that to achieve peace or success, we must temper our expectations, silence our inner longings, and practice a form of emotional restraint. However, there is a profound perspective offered by the teachings of Abraham-Hicks that suggests quite the opposite. The core of our being is not meant to be silenced; rather, we are inherently passionate, desirous creators who arrived in this physical experience with a vivid sense of clarity and purpose. Attempting to sever the connection to these deep-seated desires is not only difficult but fundamentally goes against the natural design of the human spirit.

When we examine the nature of human ambition and longing, we begin to see that desire is the engine of expansion. It is the very force that moves us forward and allows us to explore the vast possibilities of our lives. The quote from the Silver Spring gathering in 1997 emphasizes that this inner drive is persistent. No matter how much we try to push our aspirations aside or convince ourselves that we should be satisfied with less, the “passionate being” within us continues to rise. This is because our desires are born from a place of immense clarity. We did not enter this life to be stagnant or to merely exist in a state of neutrality; we came to experience the richness of creation and the joy of seeing our intentions take shape in the physical world.

One of the most beautiful and enduring metaphors in this teaching is the image of the floating cork. Imagine a cork bobbing on the surface of a body of water. By its very nature, the cork is buoyant and stays afloat without any effort. If you want the cork to stay beneath the surface, you must actively apply pressure and hold it down. This is a perfect representation of our natural state of well-being and alignment. Our joy, our abundance, and our clarity are naturally buoyant. We do not have to work hard to make ourselves “float” toward happiness; we simply have to stop the strenuous activity of holding ourselves down. When we release the self-imposed weight of doubt, fear, and the suppression of our true desires, we naturally rise back to the surface of our own well-being.

The struggle that many people experience in their daily lives often stems from this invisible effort of resistance. We spend an incredible amount of mental and emotional energy trying to justify why we cannot have what we want, or why our dreams are unrealistic. This internal conflict creates a feeling of exhaustion because it requires constant vigilance to keep that “cork” submerged. The fatigue we feel isn’t usually from the pursuit of our goals, but from the resistance we maintain against them. If we could trust the inherent buoyancy of our souls, we would realize that the path to fulfillment is paved with the act of letting go rather than the act of more intense struggle.

To live in alignment with this philosophy is to acknowledge that your desires are a gift, not a burden. They are the indicators of your growth and the signals of what is possible for you. By honoring the passionate being that you are, you stop fighting against the current of your own life. You begin to understand that you are meant to thrive, and that your natural state is one of expansion and joy. When you stop holding yourself down through negative self-talk or the denial of your inner fire, you find that the universe supports your ascent. You are designed to float, and once you stop the effort of hiding your true self, your life will naturally rise to meet the clarity and passion you have always possessed.

[Reference]:

You cannot really disconnect yourself from the passionate, desirous being that you are. It was with enormous clarity that you came forth into this body, and that’s why when you try to hold your desire down, it keeps coming up… Your cork will always float unless you are holding it down.
