Finding Flow: How Meditation and Appreciation Dissolve Mental Resistance
The journey toward a more fulfilling life often feels like an uphill climb against a relentless wind. We are taught from a young age that the harder we push and the more we worry, the closer we get to our goals. However, a deeper understanding of mental dynamics suggests that the opposite is often true. Much of the friction we experience in our daily lives—whether it manifests as stress, stagnation, or creative blocks—stems from a phenomenon known as resistant thought. When our minds are cluttered with doubts, fears, and contradictory desires, we inadvertently create a barrier between ourselves and the clarity we seek.
One of the most effective ways to dismantle these mental barriers is through the simple yet profound practice of meditation. The primary purpose of meditation is not necessarily to achieve a state of enlightenment, but to provide a much-needed pause for the thinking mind. When we consciously choose to stop the momentum of our thoughts, we also halt the momentum of resistant thoughts. By quieting the internal dialogue, we effectively clear the path for a more natural state of well-being to emerge. This practice acts as a reset button, allowing the mental fog to lift and providing the space necessary for new, more productive ideas to take root.
Beyond the silence of meditation lies another powerful tool for personal growth: the practice of appreciation. While meditation works by quieting the mind, appreciation works by focusing it on what is already working well. It is virtually impossible to feel genuine appreciation and resistance at the same time. When we shift our focus toward the positive aspects of our environment or our experiences, we change our internal frequency. This shift in perspective moves us out of a defensive posture and into a receptive one. By acknowledging value in our current circumstances, we signal to ourselves that we are ready for more positive experiences to unfold.
The synergy between stopping thought and practicing appreciation creates a state often referred to as “allowing.” In this state, we are no longer fighting against our own progress or overcomplicating our paths with unnecessary worry. We begin to realize that the solutions we seek and the goals we desire are often just on the other side of our own mental resistance. By utilizing meditation to quiet the noise and appreciation to refine our focus, we align ourselves with a smoother, more effortless way of living. This approach does not require a complete overhaul of one’s lifestyle, but rather a consistent commitment to managing one’s internal environment.
Ultimately, the goal of these practices is to foster a sense of ease and receptivity. When we stop trying to force outcomes through sheer mental willpower and instead focus on reducing resistance, we find that life begins to move with a surprising level of grace. The wisdom found in the teachings of figures like Esther Hicks reminds us that our primary work is internal. By mastering the art of letting go through meditation and building a foundation of gratitude through appreciation, we open the doors to a life of greater abundance and peace. It is in this space of non-resistance that we truly begin to thrive.
[Reference]:
That’s why so many of us teach meditation. Because when you stop thought, you stop resistant thought. When you stop resistant thought, then you let it in. That’s why we teach appreciation, because when you’re in appreciation, you are not in the mode of resistance, and you are letting it in.
